UVA Tour

UVA is a public university that holds its own with Ivy league schools and other selective schools. It’s a mid-size school with 15k undergraduates. I have to say, there aren’t many campuses I’ve visited that have left the impression that UVA has. The campus literally takes your (or just my) breath away. Thomas Jefferson’s legacy is felt in every nook and cranny. The “academic village” and greens are amazing.

UVA is a great place for serious students; the academics and social scene can’t be beat. Charlottesville is the ideal college town – it’s picturesque with restaurants, bars, shops, and even wineries and vineyards. Charlottesville is also a few hours from DC.

UVA’s most popular majors are Economics, Commerce (UVA’s business school https://www.commerce.virginia.edu/undergrad), Biology, Pyschology, Foreign affairs, Sociology
Life sciences and Public policy. The academics are intense and more than ½ of the classes UVA offers enroll fewer than 20 students. The school also offers special programs for freshman, which make the school seem smaller.

70% of students are from VA, and while UVA isn’t very diverse, the school feels progressive. 40% of students live on campus, about ¼ of all students participate in the Greek system. Overall the school is steeped in tradition. If you are looking for a public school that has academics and programs that compete with private, elite institutions UVA might be worth considering.
